In the XVII century Petralia Sottana was defined “City of Most Holy Sacrament“ by the preacher Father Luigi La Nuza.

The presence of a confraternity dedicated to the Most Holy Sacrament founded in 1590, one of the confraternities that has still the largest number of fellow brothers, explains the numerous reproductions of the Most Holy Sacrament made of ceramic, stone or tuff, that are scattered through the streets of the town to decorate the fronts of many houses.

Tradition has it that this image used to protect not only the house and its inhabitants, but also those who found themselves outside at the mercy of evil or chased by a werewolf.
